Equine Owners

In many cases, horses suffering from chronic pain and lameness must undergo prolonged medication and surgical interventions. These treatments can be costly, necessitate an extended recovery period, and may not provide satisfactory results. Both shock wave and platelet-rich-plasma therapies offer minimally-invasive treatment options that provide enduring results with minimal recovery time. You can read more about both treatments below and throughout our site.

SHOCK WAVE THERAPY

What are Shock Waves?

Shock waves are high-energy sound waves which are directed to the affected area. Shock wave treatment works by triggering the body’s own repair mechanisms, helping the body to heal. Shock wave technology therefore provides a long-term improvement. In human medicine, shock wave treatment has been performed for over 20 years to treat a number of urologic and orthopedic conditions in a non-invasive manner.

VersaTron® utilizes electrohydraulic technology to produce shock waves.  With this technology, a shock wave is generated at a spark source and is then focused to the target treatment area. The electrohydraulic technology as used in VersaTron® is the only type of shock wave technology that results in shock waves at the focus point for all energy settings.

For Which Conditions is Shock Wave Treatment Suitable?

Shock wave treatment with VersaTron® is recommended for a number of indications including the following:

  • Ligaments: insertions and desmitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Splint bone: fractures and perostitis
  • Stress fractures
  • Bone spavin
  • Navicular syndrome
  • Back problems including "kissing spines"
  • Joint conditions

How Does the Treatment Occur?

The indication for shock wave treatment is made after diagnosis by a veterinarian. Treatment is usually carried out on an out-patient basis in the veterinary practice with the animal in the standing position and mildly sedated. The treatment typically lasts 10 to 20 minutes depending on the condition. The length of the rest period depends on the underlying injury, and is determined by the veterinarian administering the treatment.  A typical treatment regimen may require 2 to 3 treatments spaced two to three weeks apart each.

What Results Can Be Anticipated?

VersaTron provides prompt symptom improvement with results generally seen within one to three weeks following the treatment. VersaTron is the preferred shock wave device of leading equine practitioners and has been proven safe and effective in more equine studies and clinical trials than any other shock wave system.

PLATELET-RICH-PLASMA (PRP) THERAPY

What is ProTec™?

ProTecTM is a self-contained, single-use kit that isolates platelets--rich in platelets--from whole blood to make platelet-rich plasma. When applied to an injury, ProTecTM Platelet-Rich Plasma delivers a high concentration of growth factors that accelerate tissue regeneration and healing.

How Does ProTec™ Work?

ProTecTM isolates and concentrates platelets into an easily-injected product that is applied directly to a wound or site of injury. The platelets contain Growth Factors that induce and support tissue repair.
Platelet-Derived Growth Factors:

  • Mediate inflammation
  • Affect tissue growth
  • Stimulate cell regeneration
  • Have an analgesic effect
  • Reduce scar tissue formation

The increased concentration of growth factors contained in ProTecTM Platelet-Rich Plasma jump-starts the healing cascade directly at the wound site. The platelets are enmeshed in a dense fibrin clot that provides structure to the wound and a matrix over which new tissue grows. The fibrin matrix dissolves slowly, releasing the platelets throughout the critical initial phases of the healing cascade. As the platelets degranulate they express growth factors that recruit new cells to the site.

Is the ProTec™ Technology Proven?

Yes. The product is currently used on humans to treat ACL repair, meniscus and rotator cuff tears, for
chronic skin ulcers and to accelerate healing of bone voids prior to dental prosthetic implantation.  Hundreds of studies have been conducted on the beneficial use of platelet-derived growth factors in the healing process. A list of selected research papers on growth factor science and applications is available on this website.

Is ProTec™ Safe?

ProTecTM is 100% safe to use. Since ProTecTM Platelet-Rich Plasma is formed only from the animal's own blood, ProTecTM PRP will not illicit an immune response. ProTecTM is a sterile, closed system: ProTecTM Platelet-Rich Plasma is not exposed to conditions that may introduce biological or chemical contaminants during processing. The interior of the tubes and all components in the fluid path are sterile.

What Applications Are Best for ProTec™?

ProTecTM is ideal to use in any application where faster healing, increased wound strength, pain relief and reduced scarring is desired. ProTecTM is ideal for use in:

  • Skin Injuries
  • Bone Injuries
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Chronic and Acute Wounds
  • Injuries with limited vascularity

ProTecTM has been successfully used to treat equine corneal ulcers, acute skin wounds, tendon and ligament injuries. Numerous studies showing the positive benefits of using Platelet-derived growth factors in healing animals and humans have been conducted.

How Does ProTec™ Differ From Other Products on the Market?

ProTecTM Platelet-RichPlasma contains all 3 elements necessary to advance tissue regeneration and healing:

  • Cells
  • Signals
  • Matrix

No other product on the market designed to promote healing provides all three.
