115 horses had radiographs taken of the thoracolumbar spine during January 2008 to December 2009
74 cases were available for follow-up
Results: 89% (66) had positive outcome to ESWT treatment (1,000-2,000 pulses at Energy Level 6)
Length of treatment efficacy: 30% (22) of horses improved for 2-4 months, 28% (21) improved for 4-6 months, and 31% (23) improved for greater than 6 months
ESWT on Experimentally Induced Osteoarthritis in Middle Carpal Joints of Horses
Frisbie, D.; Kawcak, McIlwraith, C. AJVR April 2009.
Twenty-four 2 to 3-yr. old horses without evidence of lameness
OA induced arthroscopically in 1 middle carpal joint of of each horse
14 days following inductions, horses were treated with sham ESWT probe (placebo n=8), PSGAG administered IM every 4 days for 28 days (8), or ESWT administered on days 14 and 28 with focused unit (8)
Results: No adverse treatment-related events were detected. Degree of lameness in horses treated with ESWT improved significantly, compared to sham group.
